Brown/Dead Tree Tops (July 2014)

Over the past month a number of ponderosas have shown dying or dead top branches. Bruce Benninghoff (Forestry Consultant) identified that the problem is due to Twig Beetles. Many of the affected trees (so far) are on or near high ridge lines because those trees are under higher water (and other) stress. The photo shows one smaller tree up on the Fountaintree ridge.

This brochure from CSU outlines the life cycle and possible mediation.

There is not a lot that can be done. Best defense is likely a thinned forest so that stress is minimized.
